In this introspective dialogue inspired by the Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector, we'll explore the delicate balance between being grounded in faith and prophetic in our creativity. Creatives often possess a unique gift for envisioning the future, but just like the tax collector's humble acknowledgment of his own shortcomings, this discussion invites us to examine how we bridge our lofty creative visions with the authenticity of our lives and God's will. "For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted." Honor and humility can be difficult to come by in the life of a creative. What can oftentimes be one of the subjective and competitive fields to work in doesn't lend itself to easily balancing honor and humility. "What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off?" Jesus poses what winds up being a rhetorical question to illustrate what should be obvious to his followers; lost, hurting, struggling people matter deeply in the kingdom. Heart check time this week. Do we desire to see those outside of our circles, the "other", our enemies included in God's design? What would it look like to live a life chasing lost sheep in your context?

This week we’ll be discussing the parable of The Fig Tree, found in Matthew 24:32–35, Mark 13:28–29, and Luke 21: 29–31.

"Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near." As safe as we may play it and as measured and controlled as we may be, life happens. As creatives, we've been blessed to work in the unexpected, but the blessing can come with a host of curses that may feel impossible to navigate. How do we lean into ambiguity in our work, our lives, and our relationships while maintaining certainty in God's promise of a kingdom; a new heaven and new earth?

"For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them." Jesus provides what might be best characterized as "brutal honesty" in this lengthy parable. It asks us to consider what we've been given and how to steward our talents and treasures not through our own eyes, but through the eyes of the giver. This week's discussion will be sure to check the alignment of our heads and our hearts as we reflect and discuss what faithful stewardship looks like corporately and individually.

This week we’ll be discussing the parable of The Garments and Wineskins, found in Matthew 9:16–17, Mark 2:21–22, Luke 5:36–38

"No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse." It's easy to either become comfortable with what works or frustrated with what doesn't. These can even become patterns of life, but we are challenged here by Jesus parable to continue to evaluate our life and decisions. As we live and create how do we continue to grow in wisdom and discernment and better share in what God is creating through his people?

This week we’ll be discussing the parable of The Mustard Seed, found in Matthew 13:31–32, Mark 4:30–32, and Luke 13:18–19

“The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.” Sometimes, we may feel like our contributions are insignificant or that our work may not be making an immediate difference, but Jesus continues to remind us that we should not underestimate the power of small beginnings. Creative Coffees: The Weeds

This week we’ll be discussing the parable of The Weeds, found in Matthew 13:24–30, 36–43

‘...while you are pulling the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn'” One of the most underrated characteristics of Jesus was his pace. He wasn't rushed, scattered, or foolish in the midst of the many simple, complex, and impossible situations he faced. Jesus' words (and life) reflect a confidence in the Father's faithfulness, will, and judgement. How then do we live in the same confidence while discerning the wheat and weeds in our hearts, relationships, and communities?

“But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.” Like many parables, The Parable of The Sower aims to unpack kingdom realities to an agrarian economy who does not know God. Today, we live in an attention economy. While the original audience may have sowed actual seeds, we sow seeds of attention. So where is our attention? And how does it shape our intentions?

The cure for OBS (Ordinary Bicycle Syndrome) With Jay Kinsinger

The cure for OBS (Ordinary Bicycle Syndrome) With Jay Kinsinger

Jay Kinsinger’s love of wood, cycling and his engineering background came together when he began building wood bikes in 2011 and founded Sojourn Cyclery in 2015. He’s been a hobby frame builder for nearly forty years.

Jay used to build silver-brazed, lugged, steel frames. In 2011 he swapped silver-brazing for saw dust and hasn’t looked back. It's a gratifying experience to wrought a bicycle frame out of a basal material like wood. The character and beauty of wood reveals itself the first time when it is planed and a second time when it gets a coat of finish. No two frames look the same. The carbon footprint of a wooden frame is minuscule compared to the resources necessary to turn metal ore and man-made composites into tubing for a bicycle frame.

A wooden bicycle frame is more than just a pretty face; it is incredibly tough and offers an incomparably smooth ride. Jay was awarded Best of Show in 2011 & 2014 and was the 2018 featured artist at the international Artistry in Wood show. Sojourn Cyclery was recently featured in the 110th anniversary Rolls Royce yearbook. The yearbook highlights some of the finest luxury craftsmanship in the world, and for 2020 included a two-page feature on Kinsinger’s company. The publication was recently distributed to roughly 40,000 Rolls Royce club members.

My name is Paul, and I’m an artist and designer living and working in the midwestern United States (Ohio, to be specific).

My artwork is inspired by a life lived in rural and urban contexts (with a bit of travel thrown in as well). My professional career as an award-winning architectural illustrator provides me with a knowledge and expertise of built forms, landscapes and their relationship to one another. The tension between built and natural, urban and rural is something that stirs my heart as I seek to highlight the beauty that binds it all together.

My life is blessed by the relationships of Faith, Family & Friendship. These relationships fuel and encourage my artwork, and help me keep the bigger picture in mind through all of life’s hills and valleys. - Philippians 4 : 12-13
